The Cobham Rugby Academy was formed in 2006 by Billy & Mags Davison. Billy and Mags have two children, Natasha and Thomas who have participated in all the camps over the years. (photos further down the page)
Billy Davison is the Course Director: Billy played rugby for England A, Harlequins and Saracens. Billy is currently the Director of Rugby for Cobham rugby club, Harlequins School of Rugby (SOR) coach and Head of Sport at an independent school.
Mags Davison is the Managing Director: Mags is the current Sponsorship Manager for Cobham Sports Association at Cobham and runs her own business.
The concept in forming the Cobham Academy was to provide fantastic, top quality rugby camps to children in the local areas and beyond. Our motto is ‘SPORT FOR A RICHER LIFE!” and we believe that sport can enrich your life through friendships formed (often these become friends for life) and a healthy body & mind. We aim to create an environment in which children can thrive through sport and create memories to cherish.
By 2007, the Cobham Rugby Academy was asked if they could run a multi-sports camp to incorporate a selection of sports. Two multi-sports camps are now included per year, one in the April holidays and one in August, the Summer holidays. A multiple of sports are included, and a good mix of boys and girls attend the camps. We happily soon discovered that more girls joined these camps as we provide Netball, Lacrosse, Rounders in addition to Cricket, Rugby, Football (and more). It is not compulsory to join in all the sports, but most of the children do as they have so much fun. We now also run a cricket camp in April.
The primary function of the Academy is to actively work with all locals schools to offer children the option to try a new sport or improve on an existing sport played. From the birth of the Academy, the Cobham Rugby Club has supported our concept by sponsoring a minimum of 10 free places each year! Last year 18 sponsored places were awarded and 12 places gifted to associations and charities. These places primarily go to children who’s school feels deserves a chance to either improve on or discover rugby. This has resulted in some fantastic STAR rugby players joining Cobham Rugby. Last year, 5 of these players were in the U15s squad! You can start playing ANY time!
The Academy sports camps range from between 60 to 150 children per camp. The children are grouped into their age groups and given their ‘group name’ – Lions, Sharks, Cougars or whichever names are chosen that year. Our fantastic, friendly staff are assigned to a group and rotate for each daily session. The training is specific to their age group; tag, tackling, scrummaging, full squad – whatever the age group will progress to in the upcoming season, the Academy will ensure that all aspects have been covered.
